Vidisha or Besnagar, was popularly known as Bhilsa till 1956. Post that due to its great antiquity, it was renamed as Vidisha. Lying in the Central part of Madhya Pradesh, Vidisha comes under Bhopal division and is connected to other parts of the state and country by roads and railways. The National Highway 67 that connects Bhopal and Dewas passes through the district. There are 7 tehsils and 7 blocks in the district. The block headquarters are Vidisha, Gyarspur, Basoda, Nateran, Kurwai, Sironj and Lateri. The district is encircled by Guna district in the North, Sagar and Raisen in the east, Raisen in the South and Bhopal in the west.
